The National Coaching Certification Program

The National Coaching Certification Program

Launched in 1974, the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is the CAC’s flagship program, and has been identified as a world leader in coach education. It is currently the largest adult continuing education program in Canada. The NCCP gives coaches the confidence to succeed and is designed & delivered in partnership with the government of Canada, provincial/territorial governments, and national/provincial/territorial sport organizations.

WCH currently offers three levels of NCCP Olympic weightlifting coaching credentials:

  1. Instructor Beginner
  2. Competition Introduction
  3. Competition Development

The organization and delivery of the Instructor Beginner and Competition Introduction courses is administered by the Provincial and Territorial Sport Organization (PTSO). The Competition Development course is overseen by WCH with PTSO participation in hosting the course and the evaluation component at a national championship.  The guidelines detailed herein will assist the PTSO in administering the delivery and evaluation of the NCCP Olympic weightlifting coaching credentials.

COACH BECOMES: NCCP “CERTIFIED”

Coach Developer

Coach Developers (CD) have the responsibility for delivering course content and evaluating coach candidates.  There are three different categories of CD.  The pathways for Coach Developer credentials can be found on the Coaches Association of Canada (CAC) website.

https://coach.ca/become-nccp-coach-developer

Categories of CD and the courses delivered:

  1. Learning Facilitator (LF)
    • Instructor Beginner – Analyze Performance
    • Competition Introduction – Analyze Performance
    • Competition Development – Analyze Technical and Tactical Performance
  1. Coach Evaluator (CE)
    • Instructor Beginner Evaluation
    • Competition Introduction Evaluation
    • Competition Development Evaluation
  1. Master Coach Developer (MCD)
    • LF Content Specific Training
    • CE Content Specific Training
    • MCD Content Specific Training
    • MCD must have course specific LF and CE training to deliver at all levels

The PTSO has the responsibility of identifying Provincial needs for CDs and assigning CDs to the appropriate coaching credential delivery.  It is recommended that each province with a membership base greater than 200 have at minimum six LFs, six CEs and two MCDs. Regular evaluation of CD performance should take place via participant satisfaction surveys and external course audits.

The PTSO has the responsibility of validating CD credentials for any hosted event.

 LF and CE Retraining

All LF and CE for Instructor Beginner and Competition Introduction courses must undergo content-specific retraining.  There will be two retraining events in English and one in French offered in 2024. The retraining events will be approximately three hours in duration using an online format.

During these retraining events, the LF will review the new slide decks and the facilitator guide that accompanies them, along with the revised evaluation plan. The retraining will be included as Locker events and will be capture on participant Locker accounts as a maintenance of certification event.

Pricing

The PTSO will establish the appropriate price point for the delivery of the Instructor Beginner and Competition Introduction courses. WCH will establish the price point for delivery of the Competition Development course.

A new policy of revenue sharing has been established to cover the costs of course delivery. The PTSO and WCH will receive a share of revenue for each course delivered (see table below).

The course host and PTSO must establish appropriate profit sharing for each course and obtain in writing an agreement on revenue distribution. Any travel costs for the CD must be agreed to in advance and will be withdrawn from the net profit of the course.  It is not recommended that any course be operated at a loss.  Any loss of revenue must be absorbed by the course host and PTSO as established in their profit-sharing agreement.

Course revenue sharing model:

Course WCH Share* PTSO Share* Coach Developer Share* Recommended Price Point*
Instructor Beginner $50 $50 $100 $250
Competition Introduction $50 $50 $200 $400
Competition Development $100 $100 $250 $500
Competition Introduction – Evaluation $25 $25 $150 $200
Competition Development – Evaluation $25 $25 $150 $200

* per registrant

Participant numbers will be tracked using the Locker system.  Candidates submitted for event approval will be tallied and the PTSO will be invoiced by WCH for the appropriate amount.

The mechanism of invoicing and payment of the CD and host will be established by the PTSO as part of the agreement made prior to the event.  The PTSO will be responsible for payment of CD, host, and any other expenses incurred.
